In 2013, I was one of 9 students to create a “for students – by students” graduate student group aiming to provide advice and support for everyone to achieve complete success in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. See the web page of the group that we named MCB Grad Network here: http://mcb.berkeley.edu/group/mcb_grad_network/home
We created a central repository of peer recommended resources, a peer mentor program, and designed events tailored for each critical transition point in graduate school. For summaries and ideas to get you started if you would like to adapt this model to your own department or school’s needs, see the documents in the links below:
First year – Choosing rotation labs and your thesis lab
Second year – Qualifying exams
Third year – Getting real
Fourth year – Looking towards the future
Fifth year – How to finish up
